Neuro Linguistic Programming: Is it permissible in Islam?

Question:

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is widely used for self-development, communication skills, and behavioral change. However, some of its concepts and techniques are said to be influenced by philosophical or psychological theories. Can you explain whether the use of Neuro Linguistic Programming is permissible in Islam or not?

Summary of Answer:

It is not permissible to learn, teach, promote, or practice neuro linguistic programming (NLP) due to its corrupt philosophical foundations, reliance on illusion and deception, and the serious danger it poses to Islamic creed (aqeedah).

Answer: Praise be to Allah.

Lets take a look at it in detail:

What is Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP)?

What is known as neuro linguistic programming (NLP) is a modern system that claims to influence and recondition human thoughts, emotions, and behavior through mental techniques and subconscious programming. Introduced in 1975 by Richard Bandler and John Grinder in The Structure of Magic I, it is based on the claim that neurological processes, language, and learned behaviors are interconnected and can be deliberately altered to achieve specific outcomes.

Its founders assert that NLP can rapidly treat numerous psychological and physical conditions—including phobias, depression, psychosomatic disorders, learning difficulties, and even serious illnesses—and can model the skills of highly successful individuals. ¹

However, these claims lack credible scientific evidence and although it is promoted under the label of self-development and therapy, a careful examination of its foundations, methods, and objectives reveals that it is not permissible in Islam.

Its Corrupt Philosophical Foundations

Many schools of neuro linguistic programming are built upon philosophical concepts that directly contradict the foundations of Tawheed and harms Aqeedah (belief), such as:

  • The belief in the unity of existence,
  • The denial of a true distinction between the Creator and the creation,
  • The claim that the human mind can shape or create reality itself.

These ideas are identical to ancient pantheistic doctrines and oppose the clear teachings of Islam.

Allah تعالى says: اللَّهُ خَالِقُ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ “Allah is the Creator of all things.” [Qur’an 39:62]

And He says: لَيْسَ كَمِثْلِهِ شَيْءٌ “There is nothing like unto Him.” [Qur’an 42:11]

And He says: وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ “And there is none comparable to Him.” [Qur’an 112:4]

Thus, any system that blurs the line between the Lord and His creation or promotes the idea of a single unified existence is in direct opposition to Islamic creed. Neuro linguistic programming works by planting ideas into the subconscious mind, which later shape conscious beliefs and attitudes. This makes it especially dangerous, as it may gradually corrupt a person’s belief without them realizing it. Also, anything that threatens a person’s creed and blurs truth with falsehood falls under what must be avoided.

Its Use of Illusion, Imagination, and Deception

A large part of neuro linguistic programming is based on imagination, visualization, suggestion, and mental conditioning, not on verified knowledge or sound science. Even if some people experience temporary or coincidental improvements, Islam does not permit reliance on false or deceptive means.

Allah تعالى says: وَلَا تَلْبِسُوا الْحَقَّ بِالْبَاطِلِ “Do not mix the truth with falsehood.” [Qur’an 2:42]

And He says: وَلَا تَقْفُ مَا لَيْسَ لَكَ بِهِ عِلْمٌ “Do not follow that of which you have no knowledge.” [Qur’an 17:36]

The Prophet ﷺ said: مَنْ غَشَّ فَلَيْسَ مِنَّا “Whoever deceives is not from us.” [Sahih Muslim]²

Its Claimed Benefits Do Not Justify Its Use

Even if it is claimed that neuro linguistic programming contains some benefits, this does not make it permissible when its harms are greater and more severe.

Allah تعالى says regarding intoxicants: يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الْخَمْرِ وَالْمَيْسِرِ قُلْ فِيهِمَا إِثْمٌ كَبِيرٌ وَمَنَافِعُ لِلنَّاسِ وَإِثْمُهُمَا أَكْبَرُ مِن نَّفْعِهِمَا “In them is great sin and some benefit for people, but their sin is greater than their benefit.” [Qur’an 2:219]

This principle applies to anything whose harm to religion and belief outweighs its worldly benefit.

Islam Is Not Against True and Sound Science

This ruling does not mean that Islam opposes genuine science that is based on verified facts, correct methodology, and sound evidence. Islam encourages beneficial knowledge, and scholars have spoken extensively about the scientific signs and miracles in the Qur’an and Sunnah.

However, Islam does not accept systems that are based on speculation, illusion, or false philosophical beliefs.

Conclusion

Contemporary scholars have delivered clear rulings regarding this matter, and a number of well-known experts in psychology and psychiatry have likewise cautioned against this form of programming, drawing attention to its harmful consequences and the serious threat it poses to the faith and moral integrity of Muslims.

Shaykh Salih Al-Fawzan was asked about it and he replied: “… We do not doubt our creed or our religion, and we do not allow superstitions or misguidance to enter—whatever name it is given: whether it is called sport or not sport, or ‘neuro-linguistic programming,’ or palm reading, or reading handwriting and letters, or claiming to know a person’s condition from his writing, and things like that. All of this is superstition and misguidance, and it does not confuse us at all. We are upon clear insight regarding our religion—praise be to Allah—and regarding our creed. Yes.” ³

It is not permissible to learn, teach, promote, or practice neuro linguistic programming (NLP) due to its corrupt philosophical foundations, reliance on illusion and deception, and the serious danger it poses to Islamic creed.

As for specific beneficial skills that are proven, creed-neutral, and scientifically sound, they may be learned independently without any attachment to NLP ideology or its philosophical framework.

Wallahualam (and Allah knows best)!
